Abstract:

Teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP) requires specific qualifications on the part of teachers for which reconstruction of cognitions on EAP is a prerequisite. Previous studies have largely taken the quality of teachers' EAP cognitions for granted and few studies, if any, have sought to examine in-service teachers' tacitly-held cognitions on EAP. This study aimed to examine in-service teachers' cognitions on key EAP issues including EAP goals, distinction between EAP and English for General Purposes (EGP), and EAP teacher qualifications as well as roles. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and life-history narratives from nine EAP practitioners at a state university in Iran. Results showed that the teachers' cognitions were mainly incongruent with the EAP principles. A close relationship was also found among individual teachers' cognitions on different key issues. It is concluded that despite their past practical experience, in-service EAP teachers' cognitions might be limited and in need of reconstruction. The findings may promise some implications for EAP teacher education and research.

Abstract:

In recent years, online education has become a significant part of teachers’ professional career. Moreover, it has been argued that contexts of teaching are significantly influential in EAP teachers’ practices and identities. Despite these points, little research has examined EAP teachers’ identity construction in online contexts. The present study addressed this gap by exploring the impacts of online education on 20 Iranian EAP teachers’ identity construction. The participants were interviewed and thematic analysis was run to analyze the data. The findings revealed that online education influenced the teachers’ personal, pedagogical, and social identities. More specifically, it was found that the teachers could reconstruct their identities in light of the challenges and affordances of online teaching and adopt new identities that featured concerns with both their EAP and educator responsibilities. These findings are then discussed and implications for teacher educators are offered so that they could help EAP teachers construct their identities in online settings effectively.

Abstract:

This study explores the motivational components within teacher rating systems and their impact on professional growth motivation. Employing a systematic review approach, it investigates texts pertaining to teacher rating systems, motivation, and professional development literature. By examining various texts and research findings on teacher motivation, factors influencing teacher ratings based on general, specialized, and professional competencies, as well as experience, are identified. Drawing parallels with Herzberg's motivational theory, this study provides recommendations to bolster teacher motivation and job satisfaction through improvements in the rating system.

Abstract:

teacher factors encompass the teachers’ cognitive and affective characteristics that are likely to affect their instructional efficacy. Language teacher immunity is one of the affective factors that determines the teachers’ psychological well-being in their settings. The present study strived to itemize the factors in novice and experienced EFL instructors’ teacher immunity philosophy. To this end, first, the researchers used convenience sampling for selecting 62 EFL teachers including 38 novice and 24 experienced teachers at ten prominent language institutes in Tabriz (Iran) as the participants. Second, they conducted 30-minute interviews with the participants for determining the factors that influenced their TI philosophy using a researcher-developed semi-structured interview protocol. Lastly, they used thematic analysis in order to particularize the main factors in their teacher immunity philosophy. The findings of the study indicated that while the novice teachers considered external support as the main factor in their philosophy, the experienced teachers regarded their internal strength as the decisive factor that influenced their teacher immunity philosophy. The findings may have practical implications for teacher education courses in foreign language contexts.

Abstract:

The most important capital of any organization to achieve their goals is human resource. Educational System as the most important organization in any country needs efficient and professional staff to reach its optimal performance. As teachers are the main human capital in the educational system, their knowledge, skill and expertise is very important. That is why education of teachers and teacher education Planning are of great importance. teacher education is a multiple-step process, starting from recruitment of competent people and continuing to in-service training which makes their knowledge up to date. In this process, two things are important and should be considered: first, teacher training should lead to having scientist, thinker and artist teachers that have content knowledge, the ability of problem solving and the skill to adapt to the situation. Secondly, it's important that teaching methods used for teacher training consider their culture. In this way, the teachers will be culturally bound to their local setting.

Abstract:

The importance of language teacher identity has been widely recognized recently as teachers’,professional development is highly influenced by the ways teachers view themselves. Critical orientation towards identity has also received considerable attention recently. Thus, the present study investigated the effect of a Critical teacher Education Course (CTEC) on EFL teachers’,identity (re)construction. The participants included thirteen teachers who were first interviewed using a 20-question interview checklist whose items enabled the researchers to elicit teachers’,professional identity with a focus on critical pedagogical orientation. The teachers then attended an in-service CTEC held for ten sessions. The course was primarily dialogue-based where different premises of transformative education and critical pedagogy were introduced and discussed. This was followed by the second interview session in which the teachers were asked the same questions as the first interview. In the meantime, the teachers were also required to critically reflect on their classroom practices through reflective journals. The data were subjected to content analysis (inductive category development). The findings of the study revealed that prior to their participation, the teachers viewed teaching English as a neutral act unaffected by contextual factors, whereas after the CTEC, they became more aware of the social, cultural, economic, and political factors that might affect the whole process. Secondly, compliance with the rules and regulations, policies, and the status quo marked teachers' identities. However, they changed to more integrative teachers with critical orientations after CTEC. The findings might imply that EFL teacher training/education programs become more localized, dialogic, interaction-based, negotiation-oriented, and integration-driven.

Abstract:

teachers are the main elements of a curriculum and education system. Success and failure of an education system depends on its teachers. If they have a coherent and well-formed professional identity, they will lead to the success of the system. Professional identity, like other aspects of identity, is affected by various factors. Studying this identity depends on the identification of such factors. Therefore, the present study is an attempt to examine these factors. This article is a systematic review study. After searching different databases, 81 articles were found. Having read the abstracts of the articles, the researchers selected 44 articles for systematic review. Various factors affecting teachers’ professional identity were identified through the review. These factors were classified into five categories including: 1. Background factors 2. Personal factors 3. Cultural-social factors 4. Professional factors and 5. Political-economic factors. From among these categories, personal factors were more prominent than others and had a greater role in changing and developing professional identity.

Abstract:

Transmission-based teacher education programs have mostly dominated the field of teaching English as a foreign language. Considering the prominent position of critical pedagogical principles in prospective teachers’ perceptions of their professional roles and responsibilities, there is a need for detailed investigations of teacher education programs informed by the tenets of critical pedagogy in prospective teachers’ professional identity. There has been a paucity of research that addresses the impact of such programs on prospective teachers’ professional identity in an EFL context; therefore, this study intends to address the gap. This qualitative study was conducted to examine the role of a critical-informed teacher education program in influencing prospective EFL teachers’ professional identity construction. Participants were 19 prospective teachers whose process of professional identity construction were analysed through reflective journals, class discussions, and semi-structured interviews before and after the program. Results of the study revealed three major shifts in prospective teachers’ professional identity: “ from a student’ s voice to a teacher’ s voice” , “ from an uncritical attitude to developing agency” , “ from a narrow view of ELT to a broad view” . To foster critical ideas in EFL prospective teachers, the study recommends the use of dialogic discussions and written reflective tasks in teacher education programs.

Abstract:

There is little understanding of the processes and means involved in teacher learning. Further research is needed to better understand what happens when teachers learn. Therefore, using sociocultural theory (SCT) as a theoretical framework, English for Academic Purposes (EAP) teacher learning was documented and examined. To achieve this goal, an in-depth description of nine in-service EAP teachers’ experience as they professionally learned was provided. The participating teachers’ learning was traced from an analysis of their current cognitions on EAP towards reaching a deeper understanding of the issues as mediated during dialogical interactions. Constant comparative analysis was used to analyze the data collected through observation, recordings and field notes. The findings showed that reaching an expert’s understanding involved the processes of externalizing current cognitions, verbalizing emerging understanding and full transformation in the individual’s thinking. Mediational moves (means of learning) were found to be contingent on teacher-learners’ learning needs. ‘Narrating’, ‘judgmental speech’ and ‘externalization’ were shown to provide space for using the potential of ‘speech’ and ‘others’. The findings of this study might promise some implications for teacher education.
